Health Services 10-Month Appointment Leave Accrual
- Purpose
This policy establishes annual and sick leave accrual for certain employees in health services on 10-month appointments, whose work schedules and clinical demands warrant an exception to Board Policy 420.1. - Scope
This policy applies only to Eligible Employees in Covered Health Services Positions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. No other employees or positions are covered. - Definitions
- Eligible Employee: An Eligible Employee is an employee who:
- is appointed to a Covered Health Services Position at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville,
- is assigned to work a full-time clinical schedule (normally 40 hours per week) for 10 months per fiscal year,
- is not assigned to work during the remaining months, and
meets all other eligibility requirements for annual and sick leave Under Board Policy 420.1.
- Covered Health Services Position: Covered Health Services Positions include, but are not limited to, job families and
sub-families of healthcare, clinical-services, and behavioral-health providers and
health administrators approved by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Office
of Human Resources, and the Executive Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration
or designee.
- Eligible Employee: An Eligible Employee is an employee who:

- General; Accrual
- Annual and sick leave accrual for Eligible Employees will be calculated based on the
10 month work period, subject to all limits and provisions of Board Policies 420.1
and 420.3, and applicable campus leave policies.
- Example: An employee who would accrue 10 hours of annual leave per month under Board Policy 420.1 who becomes an Eligible Employee under this policy will accrue 10 hours of annual leave per month during the 10-month period and no annual leave during the remaining months.
- Example: An employee who would accrue 15 hours of annual leave per month under Board Policy 420.1 who becomes an Eligible Employee under this policy will accrue 15 hours of annual leave per month during the 10-month period and no annual leave during the remaining months.
- An employee who would accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month under Board Policy 420.3 who becomes an Eligible Employee under this policy will accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month during the 10-month period and no sick leave during the remaining months.In no circumstance will eligibility, accrual rate, maximum carryover, or payout exceed that allowed by Board Policies 420.1 and 420.3 for 12 month positions at comparable FTE.
- All other benefits’ eligibility, including tuition waivers, will remain unchanged.
- Annual and sick leave accrual for Eligible Employees will be calculated based on the
10 month work period, subject to all limits and provisions of Board Policies 420.1
and 420.3, and applicable campus leave policies.
- Leave Usage
- Leave may be requested and used only during the Eligible Employee’s 10-month work period and may not be taken during the remaining months.
- Supervisors should consider clinical operations and patient scheduling when approving leave and should apply approval standards consistently with other leave eligible positions.
- Carryover and Payout
- Annual leave carryover and payout at separation will follow the same maximums, limitations, and valuation rules that apply to comparable 12-month, staff employees under Board Policies 420.1, 420.3, and campus leave policies.

Annual and sick leave accrual will be calculated within Workday.
