Retiree Status

To be considered a retiree at the time of termination of employment, an employee must meet at least one of the following conditions. The first four criteria are those used in Board Policy 475.1 to define emeritus status: 

Age of Retiree 

Years of Continuous Service with the University or other State Agency or Institution 

Age 65 or older 

At least five (5) years 

Age 62 or older 

At least ten (10) years 

No age requirement 

At least 20 years 

The individual has elected to retire early under the early retirement provisions of Board of Trustees Policy 425.6 and UA Systemwide Policies and Procedures 425.6. 

The individual has been designated as a University retiree because of special circumstances approved by the Chancellor. 

 
All retirees who meet one of the above criteria are currently eligible for the following privileges: 

  1. Where information is provided, retirees will be listed in appropriate campus directories; 
  2. Faculty/staff admission to campus activities and events; 
  3. Ability to exchange the faculty/staff identification card for a retiree identification card; 
  4. Opportunity to purchase discounted season tickets to Athletic events, subject to availability (payment deadlines must be met for this privilege). For additional detail, see the Tickets - Employee Discount for Athletic Tickets policy; 
  5. Use of the University libraries; 
  6. Discounted Emeritus parking permit; 
  7. Complimentary membership with University Recreation + Wellness, which must be renewed annually; 
  8. Access to UA e-mail; 
  9. Eligible for retiree health insurance (with premiums paid by the retiree) if the employee meets the plan criteria (current criteria shown below) or for COBRA coverage (with premiums paid by the employee) if plan criteria are not met.

Definition 

  • Employed by the university for 10 consecutive years in a benefits-eligible position; and 
  • Age + continuous years of service = at least 70; and 
  • Participated in the applicable benefit plans for the past 10 consecutive years before retirement.  

 

  • Retiring January 1, 2017, or 
  • later; and 
  • Employed by the university for five consecutive years in a benefits-eligible position; and 
  • Age 65 or older at retirement; and 
  • Participated in the applicable benefit plans for the past 5 consecutive years before retirement. 

Retiree privileges are subject to all applicable University policies and may be revised from time to time at the discretion of the University.
