Academic Display Spaces

I. Scope

This policy applies to publicly visible academic display spaces inside or immediately adjacent to University owned or operated buildings, including but not limited to, bulletin boards, display cases or cabinets, walls (where permitted), or other designated spaces which display student work, exhibitions of items from either University owned collections or borrowed from another institution, and similar publicly visible display spaces. 

Exterior signage and outdoor spaces are governed by Fayetteville Policy and Procedures 708.0 and 723.0 as well as UA System Policies 715.1 and 720.1.

II. Policy

Academic display spaces should be utilized to support the university’s educational mission. Academic display spaces must not contain material that constitutes copyright infringement, is used for private business activity,[1] or that violates the University’s policies or state or federal law, including, but not limited to, with respect to political activity and prohibiting discrimination and harassment. Display items must clearly identify the identity of the poster.  Display spaces should be regularly maintained in accordance with Facilities Management guidelines.  Dated material should be removed. on a regular basis.

The University reserves the right to remove material that disrupts or interferes with a safe and productive learning and work environment or that otherwise fails to comply with University policies, state, or federal law, or that violates any supplemental unit policies applicable to that location.  

Other than commercial material, any decision to remove items from display spaces for failing to comply with this policy shall be approved by the appropriate college Dean or Division head whose unit administers the display space.

III. Supplemental Unit Policies

Units with academic display spaces may establish supplemental policies provided they are consistent with all relevant University policies and procedures concerning these spaces. Such policies are subject to the approval of the appropriate department head/chair whose unit administers the display space, and the appropriate college Dean or Division head, and the Provost. 

This policy is subject to all applicable policies of the University of Arkansas.    

 

[1] Limited exceptions may be authorized as part of the University’s economic development and educational mission.
